Almost every household has one: the gift that was not quite right, the purchase that seemed sensible at the time, the thing still in its box because returning it felt like too much effort. Guilt keeps it in the cupboard for years. For a new and near-new op shop, it is close to the perfect donation.
Is it rude to donate a gift someone gave me?
An unused item sitting in a cupboard helps nobody. Passed on, it funds programs for families in crisis. That is a better outcome than guilt and storage.
Does it need to be in the original packaging?
It helps but is not essential. What matters is that the item is new or near-new, clean and complete.
What if the tags are off but it was never used?
That is still near-new. Tags make it obvious, but plenty of genuinely unused items lost their tags long ago.
What if I am not sure it is good enough?
Use the gift test: would you be comfortable giving it to someone you like? If yes, donate it. If you are hesitating, it probably is not right for a new and near-new shop.
Can I drop off several things at once?
Yes. Sorting as you go helps, but multiple items are welcome.
Where does the money go?
The Goodwill Shop is a House of Sadaqa social enterprise. Proceeds fund the charity's programs rather than going to an external owner.
Clear one shelf this weekend and it turns into support for a local family. Details and locations at The Goodwill Shop.
