The most common reason people never volunteer is a quiet suspicion that they have nothing useful to offer. Almost every organisation doing practical work needs the opposite of specialists: people who will turn up and do straightforward work carefully.

What will I actually be doing?

Warehouse work, helping with community programs, and events. Sorting, packing, preparing and moving goods that are going to families.

Do I need any qualification?

No. No qualification, no experience, no Working With Children Check.

What if I am slow or get it wrong?

Everyone is slow at first. Someone shows you the task and you improve within an hour. Nobody is timing you.

I am not confident around new people. Is that a problem?

A lot of the work is task-focused rather than social, which many people find easier than a room full of introductions. You can work quietly and still be genuinely useful.

How physical is it?

It varies. Some involves lifting and being on your feet, some does not. Say what you can and cannot do and the work gets matched to it.

What should I bring on the first day?

Closed shoes, clothes you do not mind getting dusty, and a water bottle. That is genuinely it.

The first shift is the only hard one. Start here: volunteer with House of Sadaqa.
