Work for the Dole placements have a reputation for being make-work. At a charity that runs a real warehouse and real distributions, the work is not invented: if the sorting does not get done, families do not get what they need that week. House of Sadaqa is a Work for the Dole host in south-west Sydney.
How do I get placed here?
Through your employment services provider, who arranges the referral to a host organisation. You cannot usually self-refer into a Work for the Dole placement.
What is the work?
Warehouse work, support for community programs, and events. Practical, hands-on, and visibly connected to an outcome.
Do I need experience?
No. Someone shows you what to do and you are useful from the first shift.
Do I need a Working With Children Check?
No, a WWCC is not required to volunteer with House of Sadaqa.
Who tracks my hours?
Attendance is confirmed back to your provider as the program requires. Your provider remains the point of contact for anything affecting your payment.
Can I stay on afterwards?
Plenty of people do, as ordinary volunteers. If the placement suited you, say so before it ends.
Speak to your provider about a placement here, or if you would rather come on your own terms, volunteer with House of Sadaqa. For fine debt specifically, see the House of Sadaqa WDO page.
